real-secret

A user recently asked ChatGPT a simple question: “How do I live to 140?”

The answer wasn’t what you’d expect.

It wasn’t about the perfect diet, or about optimizing every dollar, or even about genetics, or exercising.

It came down to something much more human.

How you experience your life… and the amount of stress you carry along the way.

What the longest-living communities actually show

When researchers study the world’s longest-living populations, the pattern is surprisingly consistent. Yes, nutrition matters. Yes, movement matters. But what matters just as much—if not more—is:

  • How connected you feel
  • Whether your life has meaning
  • The pace at which you live
  • And how much chronic stress your body holds onto

It’s less about optimization… and more about alignment.

7 simple rules that convey life-giving wisdom

1. Chronic stress shortens your life more than sugar.
Not just big stress. The quiet, constant kind. The kind we normalize.

2. Don’t wait for retirement to start living.
Life is not something you defer. It’s something you design along the way.

3. Don’t force yourself to stay in draining situations.
Environments matter. People matter. Energy matters.

4. Deep connection matters more than any supplement.
Relationships are not “nice to have.” They are foundational.

5. Find a reason to get up every morning.
Purpose doesn’t have to be grand. It just has to be real.

6. Stop obsessing over steps, calories, and perfect routines.
Discipline is helpful. Obsession is exhausting.

7. Rest when you’re tired. Eat when you’re hungry.
Your body already knows what it needs. Most of us just stopped listening.

A personal reflection on “someday”

Tim Goodwin shared that this idea of living now, not later, has taken on new meaning for him over time.

Back in 2014, Tim completed an exercise in which he imagined a long life and wrote down goals he might pursue along the way. At the time, one of those goals was to achieve an extraordinary level of financial success by age 65.

Twelve years later, that goal feels different.

“I still have financial goals,” Tim says, “but reaching some enormous number is no longer the point. Maybe it’s not in the cards. Or maybe I simply don’t want to do what it would take to get there. The bigger question is, why did that goal matter in the first place?”

For Tim, the answer keeps coming back to generosity. He learned from Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-fil-A, that wealth is worth pursuing because it can be used to bless others and given away with purpose. That idea continues to shape both his personal life and the mission of Goodwin Investment Advisory: leading people to financial peace, independence, and generosity.

One part of that old vision still feels surprisingly true. Tim had written that he wanted to become a “traveling philanthropist.”

And twelve years later, that dream has only become clearer.

“There are very few things I can imagine that would give me more purpose than traveling with my family and giving generously to causes close to our hearts.”

The quiet connection between money and life

At its best, financial planning is not about accumulation.

It’s about creating the ability to:

  • Spend time the way you want
  • Be present with the people you love
  • Support causes that matter to you
  • And reduce unnecessary stress along the way

Because if the goal is a long life … it’s probably also a full one. This is something we love helping our clients with: helping them determine what brings them happiness, meaning, and purpose. And helping them make a plan to align their daily life with their goals in retirement. Starting right now!

Which one feels most overlooked in your life right now? Sometimes clarity doesn’t come from doing more. Sometimes it comes from noticing what you’ve been putting off and gently choosing differently.
