Are you wanting to make a career change?

Changing Careers

Are you wanting to change jobs to align more with your gifting and passions, or want to put yourself in a better financial position? Ray Brown, Associate Wealth Advisor at Goodwin Investment Advisory, shares about having peace of mind through transitions.

Ray recently changed jobs from the Film Industry to work at Goodwin Investment Advisory. During his time working in the film industry, he worked on The Walking Dead, Mile 22, Logan, Bad Moms, Daddy’s Home, 22 Jump Street, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and 13 Reasons Why, to name a few. Changing gears he completed Dave Ramsey’s Financial Coach Master Training in 2019 and began coordinating Financial Peace University classes. Now he is an Associate Wealth Advisor with Goodwin Investment Advisory, and is currently preparing for his CFP® examination and becoming a Wealth Advisor. So he knows firsthand what it takes to change careers and make a big transition to move into the career that is the best fit for him.

Personal finance and planning play such a huge role in how we navigate all of life’s transitions. People tend to think that Investment Advisors and Financial Planners only talk to clients and potential clients about money, but the truth is that in our meetings the conversation centers around your life as a whole and your personal goals and passions. We discuss all of your life circumstances and many of the topics aren’t financial at all. We want to encourage you to evaluate and make changes in your personal planning and direction when you feel that you need to do so. There’s a left brain and right brain response to so much of the decision-making that we do, and we certainly don’t want the financial impact to be the only deciding factor in making these important life decisions. Of course we are not going to ignore financial considerations, but we’re not going to let them be the only deciding factors as we will have conversations with you to learn some of the feelings and emotions around your current situation. Check out our blog on whole-brain investing. In navigating your transitions we use something we call the goodLIFE pyramid™ which helps you discuss your current areas of focus and set individual and family goals around a variety of topics. We then work together with you to help you adjust your financial plan to help you reach your goals.

Ray made a big leap by quitting his job and beginning a fresh start because he knew in the end, even taking a pay cut, that he would be so much happier overall. The decision is risky and hard. He knows he is not the only one who has considered making a big career change, especially as we hear about a topic in the media called “the great resignation”. A higher than the usual number of employees are voluntarily leaving their jobs to pursue other opportunities. Ray made his recent and much-needed career change, but he had support and encouragement and a plan in place to help him change careers. Maybe you are reading this and you are also wanting to quit or re-evaluate your current job and pursue meaningful work that aligns with your gifts and passions. Maybe you are just stressed and need a job you don’t have to take home with you at the end of the day. Or perhaps you are wondering if you can take early retirement, but you’re not quite ready to commit yet, even though deep down you know it’s the right choice. Maybe you feel alone in these decisions and not fully confident and comfortable to make the leap. Having someone to help you navigate these decisions is a big part of what we do in our meetings with our clients. Knowing you are not alone and that you have a unique-ability team on your side can give you the wind in your sails as you step out in faith, trusting in your next best step.

It might be helpful to check out our navigating transitions blog which discusses the milestones of marriage, having a child, career change, becoming an empty nester, and retirement. Reach out to us if you want to set up a meeting with one of our advisors. During our intro call with you, we listen to your story and your goals, and then help you put a plan in place to achieve them. We will be here to guide you through all of your milestones and life transitions.
